about

Pasir Berbisik is a vast sandy area located near to the crater of Bromo Mountain. The name even became a title of a local movie directed by Nan Achnas, which was popular in 2001.

The sea of the sand, that’s how foreign people call Pasir Berbisik. So, what’s the meaning of the name? Pasir means “sand” and Berbisik means “whispering”. The legend says there was a beautiful lady who often wandered in that area and had a mysterious experience. She laid on the said and listened to the ground. After a while, the sand whispered to her magically.

Well, there is a scientific explanation regarding the legend. The whispering comes from the sound of the wind that blows on the surface of the sand. Such friction creates a unique sound, which is similar to a person’s whisper. The wind even blows such sand surface and makes it look like the waves of the sea.
